putting an earth image on a sphere

I want to try and model/animate a space scene and I want to put the solar system in it. Does anyone know how to put an image on a sphere so it looks good. I can put it on but the continents are all fuzzy and the effect is ****...

Are you using a planar or spherical map? It looks like the image isnt even wrapping all the way around. Also have you tried rendering it? Sometimes the image wont looks crisp in the lighting mode just to save memory, but when its rendered it comes out a lot more smooth. Another thought is the resolution of the map, but from the attached image it looks pretty good, so I dont think that is the case.
