Not really sure to be honest mate.

It could be a graphics problem, whats your specs? Also do you have missing menus etc? As if you do I might lknow what it is.

your screen looks fine. might be a dumb suggestion, but have you tried creating anything yet and selected it ? you're not just selecting the move tool and expecting something to happen?

i would but i have to get to grips with this version because its the one we use at college, so no point using an older version because it may not have some of the same options as 8.5 does. plus if this one is faulty then its a chance the other one could be.

Hi nexusfire,
Can you put up another screenshot, this time with an object in the view and with the object selected?

Do you have your mouse set up right in the Maya prefs?

Does yours look like this?

BTW, this is a screen from Maya 2008, but the mouse settings should look the same.

so on the last screen you posted up (with the cube in) you've either pressed the 4th icon down on the left or pressed the 'w' key right?

If it doesnt give you the move manipulators then it must be something like the gfx card or system. If you use an ATI card thenh knock off triple buffering in the open gl settings. If not then I'm not sure
