is this a configuration problem?

So whenever i create any shape is appears in just lines

but whenever i was watching tutorials on you tube their shapes were auto colored in with a Grey which i find much easier on my eyes. I was wondering if this was a configuration issue or they are just pushing a hotkey and not saying what it is, thanks.

I am using maya 2010

Press 5 for shaded view, 4 is for wireframe... I think it would be a good idea to check out Maya's getting started videos and tutorials built into the supplied help to get you started. There's a ton of better sources for tutorials than youtube. Like this site... check out some of the free videos here. Very useful.
