This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

thanks AikoWorld and antiant.user added image yeah - i was thinking of adding a cup of coffee and maybe a paper.

at the moment I have two mr area lights and a spot. to be honest i just turned the GI and FG on in the render settings, so when I checked the lights just now, none of them were using photons. the render time was 12:32, but i'm sure it took longer than that...

hey Jr.Who - thanks!

first i set a bookmark for my camera view - you need to make 2 renders from the same place so it helps to make a bookmark. i then did an occlusion render using mental ray.

next I changed to maya vector render and turned off fill objects and turned on include edges. i think I set the edge weight to 2, changed the edge color to white and made the style entire mesh. i also turned on edge detail and turned off outlines at intersections...or I may have had that on...i'm not sure....i think those are the right settings.

anyway, that should give you a white wireframe on a black background (i think you may want to hide your ground plane as well if you have one).

save the renders as targa and now just open them in photoshop. Invert the wireframe so it's black wireframe on a white background and then put it over the occlusion render as a multiply layer.

i think that's right. let me know if you have any problems. user added image

Leaf's looks very believable.

Only thing i would suggest is that if the final render is pretty close-up to the flower, is to alter some leafs such as some maybe be skinny/short/small etc so that there not really that identical(if you wanted, just a thought :p)

Looking good arran!

To test the shader crank one for the scattering layers weight well ott and do a render.

Have you checked out the gnomon tutorial for it?

marlonjohn - good idea - yeah, i messed with the scale a bit, but i might make the ones near the end a bit smaller so they look like they're still growing. I need to thicken them up a bit as well.

cheers gster mate! user added image yeah, i watched the gnomon vid the other day. very 'funky' - i'll give that shot. I'm also wondering if it's the fact that the leaves are so flat, that it doesn't really show. this is my first play with sss.

DJbLAZER - cheers! user added image

thanks zico_samagoriauser added image i added the color map to the incandescence and then toned it down as it seemed a bit much - I'll take another look at it. user added image
