This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

Hey people in the 3D world,

I have a little problem in my scene and i hope that one of you can help me with it..

I have made the earth by just making a sphere and putting a earth texture on it.. I have put a light on it so only have of the earth is lit..

But what i want is that in the part that is not lit by the light a other texture appears.. And for that i have the earth night texture... How can i get this effect? please help me..

I know that in 3D max it was called a falloff map. But i dont no where i can do this in Maya..

Thank Jaroehluser added image

well one way to do this is to do it using 2 shaders.

Create 2 lambers/blinns, whatever you choose. Place your "day" texture on one, and your "night" texture on the other.

with the hypershader still open, select the faces which will be lit and right click your day shader and choose "apply to selected"

Then hold down the shift key and marquee drag over your geometry, it will deselect the current faces and select the other faces.

Apply the night texture to the faces which are now selected.

This will be a "hard" transition from texture to texture, but it's the quickest way to do it.

Well, that was my mistake, as a nurbs object it's not so simple, the quick fix to this is to convert to SubD

Modify>convert>NURBS to SubD

Use polygon proxy mode and choose faces.

otherwise, you could create an image in a photo editing sofware (photoshop or whatever) placing the 2 pieces (night/day) together (thus allowing to you make the shift smoother with the tools in that sofware....)

then apply the texture to the sphere and adjust the settings in the place2dtexture node as necessary.

REMEMBER: when applying a texture to a Nurbs sphere keep an eye on the seam, it can cause some rather tricky problems user added image
