Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

problems with mental ray lighting

hello, I just started using Maya 7 a few days ago and I am already having a few problems with lighting.

As you can see, I've tried to render something like this

which is based on a tutorial from https://www.highend3d.com/maya/tutori...ray/241-3.html
but mine ends up looking like this

does anyone know what I am doing wrong? I've probably messed with the hypershade materials/rendering settings for at least 2 hours and I've made zero progress. And how do I add the shiny/reflective touch to this gear?

Thanks

make sure u have the correct setting like raytracing, final gather ect.

make sure u r using a hdri map rather than a jpeg (get it from the link they provide)

make sure ur gear is the correct side of the ground plane
use the directions in the bottom right hand corner so that Y points upwards an ur gear is that side of the floor plane

what material r u assigning to the gear - use a blinn or dgs(uner mental ray nodes) - lamberts wont work

if this doent work post up the file an i will have a look

I still need to work on the lighting but nevertheless, I'm happy with the results!

Hey Machlin, click on your object and go Polygon>Smooth...

Then rerender that...I bet it will looks a million times more realistic.

pbman, my problem was that I assigned my material to a Phong E material rather than a Blinn and I didn't know how to add the HDRI map file before

Esion, thanks. my gear looks a lot more realistic after i smoothed its teeth. https://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-6/1190298/gear2.jpg

I just need to make it look more metallic.

No problem man...

Increase your specularity a little bit...if you go too much it will be so reflective that it will look see-thru at the bottom...that should make it a nice mirror polished metal color.
