Colour banding?

Heres a close up of an eye i'm making, everythings going fine but when i render it (closeup) i'm getting a horrible banding which just won't do for the anim ive got in mind user added image

I'm not sure if its Maya's renderer or am i doing something wrong?

Resembles a shadow issue... try messing with the shadow settings.

try raising the dmap resolution, if you haven't already

ahhhh, dmap resolution user added image where exactly would i find that user added image
Is 'dmap' depth map, cos i've searched everywhere and can't find anything resembling dmap or depthmap resolution anywhere user added image

i agree with mtmckinley, looks like shadow maps are not set high enough

i got a feeling its in camera attributes or maybe your lights attributes.
