Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

July/Aug - Norm- Darkmonk

hi all,

This is my first time posting for a comp so i hope i do this correctly.

My idea is about the fear of the Dark outdoors,
The image will be of a dark silhouette of a person walking through the trees but everywhere you look the trees will appear to have faces and long scary fingers just ready to grab you.

Here is a couple of reference images that aided my thoughts in this design.
https://www.mobius3.freeserve.co.uk/FnL_Comp/FnLref.jpg

and a Very quick scetch i prepared.

Would love to hear what you all think of this idea and please let me know if i have done something wrong user added image

Tree Demon update

hi all,

Here is another quick update to show how my treeDemon is coming along.
https://www.mobius3.freeserve.co.uk/F...reeDemon02.jpg

going to add more detail to the tree now and some more branches then get it wieghted to a skeleton.

Have been playing with paint effects a little today and love some of the effects i can get but i need to know one thing:-
Is it ok to use paint effects in this competition to add extra detail to my geometry or do i have to model every last branch and foliage ?? This being my first competition i dont want to break any rules user added image

update

hi,

Not been working much on this as i have been researching fog and lighting in Maya.
Here is a quick pic of the layout im going to use, im having difficulty getting a light setup with fog that i like.
https://www.mobius3.freeserve.co.uk/F...nLLayout01.jpg

dont have the bump on the image just now and ill start filling up the scene after i get the fogging to look better.
The human figure is just a temp figure until i make a better one to fit the scene.

Looking good Dark Monkuser added image

I'm also having problems with light fog in mental ray, are you using maya software render or mental ray? I'm trying to get rays of fog coming through the window. It works fine in maya sodtware.

anyways keep up the good work man!!

hi vedic,

i was wanting to use Mental ray but i am having loads of difficulty getting good rays coming through the fog.

Also i do not know how to use enviroment for in Mental ray as the option dissapears when you change from the software renderer.

:headbang:

I have a tutorial im working on so this might help, fingers crossed.

to be honest dark monk, I think the actual composition and lighting are almost spot on already user added image

Only thing I'd say is to add detail to the base of the trees, like some knarly roots poking out of the ground near the base of the trees or alternatively add fog around the base of the trees. Then adding your bumpy effect back to the tree demons and you should be sorted.
(just my humble opinion though) user added image

thanks t1ck135,

im pretty happy with the composition just now but i might make a slight adjustment to the tree on the left.
and also add a little more depth by moving the human figure further away.

Im going to add loads of extra roots and vines etc.. as soon as i can figure out this fog, trying to get the atmosphere right before i get carried away with all the extras user added image

yeah i have unlimited, never used any fluid before sounds interesting though.
ill keep an eye out for your updated image to see what its like, I have figured out how to get good looking fog using MR.

You need to use a Parti_Volume shader attached to an object that encompases your scene.
i found a tutorial on the cgtalk website. so far my tests look good, ill try and get it into my scene and get an update before i goto bed tonight.

im looking forward to seeing your fluid fog.
