Shadows too strong for glassy material

I am using a dielectric_material for three blocks of glassy substance for a model, but the shadows as the light passes through the materials are way too strong. I have ray trace shadows on, and have increased the numbers of ray trace reflections and refractions to 8 and 8, max depth to 24 and shadow depth to 3. I'm not using any caustics, since they seem to not work. Any idea how I can make the shadows more realistic (and coloured) as they pass through the material?
