Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Change the direction of a wedge

Hey, I'm new to Maya and have tried for hours now to solve this problem on my own, but can't seem to figure it. I have the tutorial book Introducing Maya 7 (even though the program that came with it is Maya PLE 8.5) and am trying to follow the directions to create a model of a hand.

I'm stuck creating the thumb as it says to make a wedge from one of the faces. Everytime I try, however, the wedge ends up going into the hand, and not away like it should be.

If someone could explain how to change the direction of the wedge, it would be greatly appreciated.

It could be that you're selecting the wrong edge.

I wish it was that easy....I just double checked to make sure, but that doesn't seem to be it.

I'm selecting the face, then the edge, then going to Edit Mesh > Wedge Face []

Even then, the wedge is still going into the hand, and I can't seem to manipulate it to make it go the other way

Sounds like the normals of that face are screwed up. Try reversing them.

Haha I've been using Maya for like 2 days, so I have no clue what you mean.

I know when I tried to move some edges earlier on that spot, it seemed to duplicate them so I had to delete them... Maybe that messed something up

If you could explain how I "reverse the normals," that would be awesome.

PS, this is my first time visiting this board, so its great to see how quick suggestions are given, not to mention how impressed I am with everyone's work.

Select the face. Then goto: Normals> Reverse.

Sounds like you have faces on top of faces there. You probably made some extrusions that piled up. And I don't remember the layout of 8.5 but I think the option to reverse normals is under Edit Polygons, Edit Mesh > Normals, something like that, not sure if normals had their own menu in that release.

edit: lol posted too late, watching family guy ><.
