default lighting

Hello all!

Recently exported FBX from Max into MAyA, all is well apart from one problem that I hope you can help me with.
There appears to be some default lighting in the scene when I render. It doesn't matter which light I put into the scene or its level of intensity, everything is always lit up. I have no real control with the lights.

Any ideas?? It appears like there is some overall light level equivalent to the "global lighting" in the environment tab in Max".

I have been through ALL the render settings.

help!

Then it must be one of your lights, ambient light in the scene?

no it wasn't a light. It turns out that the FBX had assigned each texture an ambient-colour of grey! when i moved this down to black, this apparent self-illumination disappeared.
