Assigning materials

Hello everyone - first time poster as I just decided that Maya is the CG program of choice for me.

Anyway i was wondering if the is a way to assign a portion of a model a name and therefor a specific texture. For example if you have a pillar could you come how name the vory top of the piller a name and give it one texture and the middle portion another and the bottom another. The reason i am asking is my first project is working on some letters (the letter s for example) and the UV maps are almost imposible to follow when in photoshop. So i would like to assiing the face of the letter to a texture and work with it independantly of the rest of the letter.

Hope i explaned that all

If it's a single mesh, the it will have a single shape node to be named. To work around this you can create quick selection sets and map/texture each and/or create UV sets for each.... assuming this is not a NURBS object, in which case you need to covert it to something UV friendly.
