Unlimited Detail Real-Time Rendering Technology

Just found this on youtube, it's quite weird. Instead of using polygons some company is making a 3d software which uses tiny atoms like in real life so they say it has unlimited detail and no polygons. The thing is it kills your computer as the amount of atoms. On the demonstration on the video in each cubic inch they have a million atoms, they've made a polygon converter for it but im thinking, is this the future of 3d softwares?!?!?

those atoms are called point clouds, all the lighting will be baked.... a bit like old fashioned games.
