How to do heat distiortion waves effects???

Like when you are in the desert, you look at the road and there is some waves because of the heat.
I have no clue how to do it at maya. Anyone???

do it in post for example, after effects, fusion, shake

to do it in maya i think (never seen it been done) you can do it with particles... just play with the materials and fields

Personally I would do it in post using particles as a displacement, too much messing about in maya.
