Refining poly objects

Hi all,

when trying to refine a poly object which has both sharp angles and smooth flowing areas - what process do you use.

As you can see in the picture I lose a lot of the definition when smoothing the mesh. Should I bevel the hard edges, subdivide all the faces?

I am never sure what is the best method - if any for this.

Your image didn't load properly.

Using bevels can do wonders.

You could also average the normals on you model to get a smoother look. Have you tried that?
