Newbie Problem!

I am a C4d User and now moved to Maya.
I like maya but how can I select only the visible components
and not the components on the backside.
Problem: I want to select some faces and the faces on the other
side are also selected

I miss this function in Maya!

Either shift-click or use the "paint selection tool"
