wondering if there is a poly minimum to use a normal map?
i plan to make a high rez model to use as a normal map.
i wonder how low i can go on the low poly and still get good results, or is there a minimun limit

if you make a high-res mesh for the normal map generation, there is no poly limit for it. The poly limit is only for the low-res mesh.

i see. but i also wanted to know how low my low poly can be for the norm map to work properly and give nice results.
in another words what is a good low poly to high poly ratio
thanx mike.
this will be my first attempt at a real time model and normal mapping

obviously, the higher res the low poly, the more realistic the normal map result, but you could have a simple plane with a normal map on it and be surprised at how good it looks. The only place where you would really see imperfections would be the profile of the geometry, as it doesn't displace.
