thats a hard one???

WITH TOTAL RESPECT TO ALL SM PATRONS, Im amazed at some of the questions i see here. dudes are asking NOT for advice or C and C.., but for hours of personalized tutoring.., i believe it in innocence and from not knowing the complexities of maya.

some questions might need a simple answer and others a whole tut.

what i mean is i think dudes will learn far more if.., before posting there do some google search for tuts, the area, the help files, or some exploration so they have gained some knowledge through research and have an idea of the subject and can be succinct in what they are asking. often its questions that can be answered with one of the free tuts here.

basically its in their own advantage.., that why im posting.., to say more than likely if the question is toooo difficult one could be disappointed by no 'real' answer.., maybe some guesses.., but if its too long, usually those that know havent the time to answer them.

similar things can happen in the 'real' world in other ways.., a friend asks for 'a little help' and the next thing you know they are e-mailing 6 times a day and you have become a personal trainer (for free). worse, they ask for help on a project.., 'only an hour'.., three weeks later its done and you get a credit in a font size of 6.

and while im here.., can anyone tell me a simple way how to make rays of light, complete with sand particles, in an underwater scene??

(ducks from the stones being thrown at him)

this is a noob site to say the least. people are eager to go from a to z in a month.

they want the quickest way to learn and bypass all the searching and 'hardwork'. thats why they buy tuts and ask the same Qs on forums over andover.

its the vicious cycle of CG. it will never go away. i asked so many noobs Qs myself ...

but i hear what you are saying tho. it helped when the irc chat room was up back in the day. there was less spam here, because people just chat and asked the Qs and shoot the shit all at once...

now THAT sounds cool.., but i bet high maintenance for the site mods.

i really think that just to 'resaech' oneself before asking really helps in many ways.., not just using maya but to learn to think for ones self too.

but we all did it at one stage.., asking the impossible. user added image

unfortunately it seems to me that a fair amount of people are ones who are brought up without re/searching skills... although i could be wrong because the majority of people may go and actually search for the answer and we would never hear from those people

of course, it's a lot easier to ask someone directly for an answer than to spend hours searching and turning up nothing
of course for that to happen you have to be searching for something reasonably rare or obscure or just not using the right words

research is a pain in the ass with all that reading, but then the documentation for Maya isn't even in some technical language. it's not like you get swamped with specialised terminology and formulas....

i think once people try it.., they will like it.., it may even be addictive (health warning)

I find that one valuable (VERY VALUABLE) ability as a 3d artist is the ability to solve problems (troubleshooting). I can't imagine a company hiring an artist and then keeping them around if they are constantly having to ask questions.

So, I believe that an artist needs to not only develope their artistic skills, but their troubleshooting and research skills as well. And yes, I've had my share of asking the newb questions too. I think it's all part of the learning process.

And like vladimirjp said, I too was eager to go from a to z overnight. I wanted the quickest and easiest way. But I have in time, learned the value of searching and "hard work". It really does pay off and I believe it makes you a better artist.

So for all you newbs reading this...ask questions if you need to but at the same time, as mirek03 said, develope those research skills.

LOL, I'm sorry mirek but that made me crack up. Unfortunately moochers aren't going anywhere, most folks will try to pull a fast one as long as others cater to them. Personally, I like reading and problem solving, jumping the hurdles, and the whole crazy journey. Some people see only the destination and can't nail em to the cross for that /shrug

I've never really done tuts,
I find a new tools and use trail and error.
Reality is that you can't learn quickly, you have to get familiar with Maya's tools, learn in detail about each one then practice with the tools/Maya's features then compose them together(a scene, whatever) then learn more then make something else...
I'm not saying the tuts don't help(like a project page of whatever someone has done and they outline what they did and how) but for me I'd rather screw around until I get what I want and if it doesn't work I look around online then lastly ask here...

I understand where you are coming from. I'm new to Maya but not new to 3D. I have designed and built many things in 3D - Machines/Cabinetry, but using AutoCAD 3D programs. This is my first attempt at Maya. I am taking online classes from UAT to hopefully gain a BS in Game Art & Animation(single father of 3 kids and work full time).
I have downloaded many-many tutorials about how to start out. I just started Kurts Basic Human tutorial. But i'm trying to adapt it to something I want to model. And yes, i came up with an issue, but was able to find the answer by researching what it was. The issue - Lost the grid on my perspective view. All other views had it but that one. I figured it out. Then I was putting the sphere in and needed to add Isoparms. My menu bar didn't have Edit NURBS pull down. Got it figured out too. It took a little bit but I enjoyed the challenge of finding it myself and learning along the way.
In a world of fast gratification and information, people don't want to do the work for themselves. They think its better to ask people questions and get the answer so they can move on-without fully understanding what it is they did.

Alright.. enough of my yapping.. i'm going back into the shadows to learn.. well time to get to work actually.

I want to thank all though.. I'm learning a lot here and hope to achieve the level of proficiency that you all have one day!
