Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Help with Gold

I'm trying to get into rendering now for realism and trying to make a gold dice to look real. I'm using mental ray at the moment but wish to experiment with maxwell.

Any suggestions will be very appreciated. Thanks

This is what i got till now

Hmm, I think in order to really comment you need some sort of backdrop in there. Something that it can sit in to give it a real world feel if thats what you are aiming for.

you dont see many gold dice floating around in the dark where I live LOL

cheers

HDRI lighting. It will help to highlight proper texturing anytime. The tough part is getting the reflections/refractions right and the specular highlights. It'll take lots of tweaking and time to figure that out.

most gold has more white in the color. yours looks more like bronze. just go to the color picker, change from RGB to HSV, and decrease the saturation by like 30-40%.

but then again yea jay's got a good point. changing the environment and stuff the die will be reflecting will change the color/appearance as well.

Yeah but the dots on the top doesnt seem to be exact linear, you should try to fix that, if you have a hard time placing them straigt use a measuring tool or just a plane that you scale. user added image
