mirror geometry

hello, i applied mirror geometry successfully along the -X axis, but when i extrude edges, on the mirrored side, the new edges do not get extruded? have i set an option incorrectly?

you might try selecting instance in the duplicate>options.

when i duplicate and use instance.. must all objects that i duplicate be set up along the orgin or X axis and such? becuase when i do this it ends up on top or something of the original geometry

below settings usually work for me.
if the result is not what i ntended i just try
the other axes til i get what i need ...
