Paint Effect jumps all over the mesh, Help!

I am trying to draw simple tubes on my mesh that was imported from Rhino as OBJ. Whenever I draw a simple stroke on the surface (I've made it paintable), the brush jumps all over the place in and out of the mesh. Is there a way to fix this mesh? I have the mesh generated from Weaverbird in grasshopper. Thank you very much!

Thank you very much for your reply daverave. I just solved the problem! turns out the imported object has weird UVs. I just had to let it auto create UVs again and it works perfectly. Thanks!
