Rendering particles with regular animation?

How do you merge your particle animation with a regular animation, at the moment I can only render particles in the hardware render buffer.

Thanks in advance. user added image

Usually you would use a compositing package to layer the particle effect in with the standard animation.
If you have Maya 2008 then you should be able to render particles with mental ray.

Examples of bTraffic - a traffic animation tool for Maya
bFlocking - a tool for Maya 8.5+ to generate flocking and swarming behaviours
