Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Skewing a cylinder

This is basic but I'm having trouble with it. I'm trying to smoothly skew a poly cylinder the same as I did to this cube (see pic). With this it's just selecting the top edge of one side, the bottom edge of the other and scaling along the z-axis. Simple but I've been practicing the same thing with a cylinder and can't seem to get an even diagonal. Have tried playing with edges, vertices, and faces, both moving and scaling but no luck. I realize i could do it by drawing cv curves and applying rotate but I'm trying to get my poly modeling skills up to par. Any suggestions would be great.

are you trying to do this as in the picture? if so, just select all the top faces of the cylinder (i used the standard for making a poly cylinder) and move the faces in x or z. that does the job. otherwise you need to explain better what you mean, it is not clear what you did to the cube in your pic.

That's exactly what I was trying to do. I restored everything to default and did it your way and it worked fine. The only difference when I originally tried it was that I had rotated it first in the z-axis so everytime I tried working with faces, it pulled them straight out instead of at an angle. That's what was throwing me off. Still getting used to working with 3D directions.

Alternativly you could choose the vertices and just move'em.
