Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

Extruding with parallel faces?

I'm having a problem with extruding in Maya. Please see the attached image. 3D studio max produces the results I want, but maya seems to average between the edges which creates this wonky effect. Can I do something about this? Is there a setting I'm missing? Its poses a big problem when working with more complex shapes.

Thanks!

Wow you are right, I just tried to figure that one out...no luck, I am curious to know what the answer is...sorry bud.

I could get it, but it was complex, had to unselect some faces, and adjust the faces until each was at the correct distance...not very easy at all...

I, well,

Thanks for trying.

Just to correct myself, Max does it too... How odd. It wouldn't seem like the blending at edges would be of use at all... surely parallel faces would be more useful.

Oh well!

hmmm...I am not at my computer right now, so I am not sure if this will work... but you could try selecting the faces, hitting extrude face and then press ctrl as you use the green arrow to move the faces out.

well, i just gave it a shot and it didn't work, so sorry about that... there must be a way though, other than doing it manually.

it's because the edge is averaging the normals between the two faces...i messed with all the options in the extrude, as well as all the normal options, but i couldn't find any way to change it...well...that's not true...but the way i found is much more arduous than just tweaking the two verts :p
