Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Use Background Shader

I have been playing with a shader called: Use Background. I read Maya's reference about it, but I still don't quite get it. Why is it called Use Background, when it seems to be a way to copy shadows into an alpha channel? Does anyone use this shader?

you understand it perfectly..the use background is useful for when you use a real photograph as a background image and want to place geometry in the scene, you can then create shadows of your geometry in the background image and thus making it appear part of the original background.
