If i try to add any fire effect at the point of passing through the ring it stays there when the animation starts again and the ball remains on fir throughout, any ideas how to have this just happen from the point it passes through?

You could just render the ball not on fire up until when it is supposed to light on fire. Then render the rest with it on fire, and put them together in a compositing or animation program.

you need to key the animation to start at the correct point.

It will be under something like "emitter>>rate".

It looks good to me, but the frames before it is on fire plays very slow for me. Maybe those frames have a delay?

My only major critique would be to have the particle emitter on the ring start BEFORE all the events take place, to leave some time for the fire on the ring to build so it won't look like the fire just got ignited.
