if you want total thickness all over an option is to duplicate the object and scale it down a little, combine the two and then use the append to polygon tool to fill the edge gaps.
It really depends on what you are after. but most ppl just do as you do and extrude the edge out and back so it gives the impression of thickness.

Yup ..the idea of selecting all the faces and extruding them is working better for what i want.
I don't know why I didn't think of that...maybe cause I'm a noob.

it seems that you're smoothing after the extrude. if that's the case, then perform the extrude twice or three times. the more faces you have along an edge, the less sharp it will be.
