Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

my first piece (APU)

So after seeing 13th_resident’s APU model in the WIP section I became motivated to make one myself. I tried doing this model once but gave up really early on because for lack of reference materials. So I found the 3dpalace apu tutorial (which is for 3dsmax) and drew my own reference images.

In the end I guess it doesn’t matter that the turoiaal was made for 3dsmax. I guess it just comes down to breaking everything down to it’s most basic shape and then putting it all together.

There’s no way to use image planes on this monster, unless you use them to model individual sections. Ive drawn individual pieces not only for reference but to use them to know how to assemble the machine. This might sound obvious but damn if this thing doesn’t have 1000 individual objects to model. I just figured that if I drew each section, id know how it was made up. Instead of flipping between maya and the tutorial.

I’ll start with the toes and work my way up like they did in the tutorial. So here goes the center toe:
