Complex UV Layout in Maya

Boolean attach

Quick question for the experts. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I am attaching an arm to a body using polygons. I am using a tutorial and it says to select the body hit enter and select the arm and hit enter and then go to Boolean- Union. Well I do that and I get an error saying

"This command requires at least 2 arguments to be specified ;1 found"

So it doesnt recognize when I hit enter for each one. Any suggestions on how to do it?

If anyone could help that would be great! Thanks.

I converted the original sub-d's into Polygons and it said to select the arm, hit enter, then select the body and hit enter, and then go to boolean- union.

What do you think from whats there? It is attached all the way around.

I think it might be something with my settings in Maya or something, but Im not sure.

sorry, not attached but the arm is going through the body, so there isnt any space

Well the steps are wrong... select the arm, hold down the SHIFT key, then select the body, then select edit polgons-->boolean-->union.

Well when I do that, this is what happens. So I am not sure what the deal is.

Looks like the arm is attached to the body, isn't that what you wanted?

Look at the hand though, it attaches to the body. How can I make it so it doesnt do that? The hand part isnt suppose to attach, just the base of the arm where the shoulder is suppose to be.

So the boolean is bending the arm and attaching at the wrist also?

Yeah it is. But I finally figured it out. I dont know why it is blending the hand with the body, but I went in where it attached to the body from the hand and deleted the edges. Thanks for all the help recieved though, I appriciate it guys.

is this rigged? Boolean shouldn't bend anything...

lol, I'll take that as a no. Rigged i.e. has a jointed skeleton attached usually for animation or posing.

I've never seen boolean bend an object before so I though it might have been affecting a skeleton.

I know boolean operations are finicky about having open faces and vertex points too close together, but this is a new one for me. Anyone else seen this before?

ahh I see, Rigged, got it! haha. No its not rigged.

I am not familiar yet with the Maya lingo, but I am gettin there! (trying anyways, I have a ways to go, as you can see!)
