I use layers and hide them so I don't have all geometry visible all the time, but there's no lag if all's visible at this time either.

Bought a new computer las week:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
4 GB RAM
GeForce 8800GTS 320MB

Hmmm i have the same but a different video card and my maya isnt the hottest.. mabye its becuase i have vista and 8.0 maya isnt good on it..

yea i have maya 8.0 64 bit on a vista 64 bit too lol but 8.0 is already over a year old.

just did my funky plant for the vase. The material could probably use some SSS, don't know if I'll bother though since it wont show unless the camera is really close.

No... haven't tried it yet. But the scene and materials has to be really simple in that case. They you could get something like 5-10 mins per frame in decent quality 640x480. Might give a simple scene a shot in a couple of days.

I'm just asking 'cause I know single scenes can take a long while. I don't know how long a short movie would take.
