thats up to you, is it really necessary for you to upgrade? Thats the first question I'd ask myself. I'd also wait to see what other peoples opinions are.

some good reasons to upgrade.

I personally love what autodesk have done for maya and it seems to me as if maya is alot more stable as well. 8.5 has got alot of cool new features and I`m now really looking forward to maya 2008 (although I hate the naming) as those new rigging tools look very handy indeed.

It really depends what your needs are. If you think back to movies like Perfect Storm or LotR or any other notable CG movie from several years back, they were using older versions of Maya in the pipeline. There's a lot underneath the hood even with the older versions that you could spend a lifetime learning. There are nice additions with newer versions but I haven't really come across much I couldn't do with the earlier ones. I've talked to some folks that use the newer versions 8.0 and 8.5 in production settings and have heard some horror stories about bugginess....nice ideas, just not implemented well. If you're going to upgrade, just wait for the new release and see what verdict is.

Yeah i would definitely wait for Maya 2008, mental ray can render hardware particles.
It's a shame they didn't add all the features in maya 8.5 though(we all know they already developed these things, right?)
