adding water to glass

im not all that new to maya, but ive never had any classes and have only read a few tutorials. im very familiar with the interface and tools and what not. i dont know much about dynamics though. my problem is im starting my first true project (with actually lighting, my own texturing where needed, modeling, etc.)

im using mentalray for the render, and i have the glass with dielectric assigned to it. i just dont know how to properly add water to the glass. i tried adding an emitter inside the glass and adding a gravity feild to the particles, but even when i slow the velocity of the particle emission down, the particles are all jumbled up.

is there anyway to simply "pour" particles into the glass?
