UVs

er im in process of uv mapping and ive watch a tut on uv mappin in zbrush and i really like the UV mapping technique he uses, he maps all planer then joins up but maps how you would see them e.g. maps chest, the side, the back all seperate and then makes em so thy dont distort, and im tryin to do that with my model but everytime i planer map it maps the whole object, i know i could extract the faces but its a pain cos i wont wont it all seperate, in zbrush he wos mappin just the faces he selected how do i do this in maya?
Thanks

select those faces you need to map and do a planar projection on them.
