Duplicate problem

I have modelled and duplicated half a torso, now when it comes to merging the vertices in the central seam of the model, for some reason this doesn't work. I've tried grouping the two halves and merging but still the same. Can someone shed some light for me please.

combine the two halve first. Group doesn't place them under a single shape node.
