Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Hi all,

I needed a break from modelling Lego for this months challenge, and I had a bit of free time the past two days, so decided to try out modelling a skull. Still got a bit to do detailing wise, I want it to look old and decayed.
After seeing Kurt's Zombie model that he's been working on I got inspired so might try turning this into a severed head after I've finished it.
Base mesh in Maya, sculpt in Z....

Skulls seem to be the rage at the moment. Im working on one, mayaniac made one recently. Looks good.
Its interesting seeing the similar features, like that little bit that protrudes out and down behind where the ear goes.

Ben:

Cheers mate, yeah I did notice a few on various sites, hows yours coming along?
It is interesting seeing the way different people have structured such a simple object, its also interesting seeing how many very slight subtle differences there can be in the human skull, looking at all the references I collected there are so many varieties of the old head bone! lol

Bullet:

Thanks also, and you may be right! Might be a subconscious thing. Personally I've started working on a graphic novel series again that I started developing a couple of years ago, and there will be need for a pile of bones in it.

Done a little more to my skull, still got to get on to some more detailing on the left side, started working on something else last night and didn't get back to this. Will do later today though.

Yeah, I like what youve done with the inner area of the nose. I havnt started sculpting mine yet, just got a rough base mesh which I wanna loop up some more before doing any sculpting.

Bullet: Thanks mate, also thanks for reminding me that they are called fusion plates, I was trying to remember but my mind wasn't having it! Haha
Not sure of any back story for the skull, I just know there will be need for bones of all varieties in this story.... Not read Feist as yet, was more into Tolkien of that genre, or Pratchett for more a humorous time, although I did read a wide variety of styles at that time (between the ages of 7-14), Tolkien, Dickens, Stevenson, Poe, Ian Fleming,Steven King, Dc and Marvel comics, Tintin and Choose your own adventure/Fighting Fantasy, to name just a very small amount (I read almost constantly as a child, that or watched old black and white films)
so my story might be a bit of a mixture! lol

Dave: Cheers, I have worked on them a little more since that post, but it's been put on the backburner for now, I'll get back to it sometime when its needed though.

Steve: Thanks mate, nice to get a Z addicts approval! lol I'll try and get back to that cave troll oneday too.....haha

Ben: Thanks too, I would like to see how you got on with yours, but I know you have your attention on other models, and indeed other areas of 3d at the moment so maybe in the future when youve done a bit more to it then.

Been working on the main characters for my graphic novel series, it gets me a bit more inspired than just writing all the time, and it's also good to see the faces in my head appearing in front of me finally!
This is Eddie (so far, still got a long way to go)
I'm not going to say anything as to who he is in the story, or anyone else either as once I start I'll probably not stop and give too much away.
Not sure how long it'll take to get this story worked out, and all the characters done, I first came up with the initial idea about 8 years ago so I just hope it gets finished oneday....lol
Still not sure whether to just draw the whole thing or utilise 3d for it, at the moment these are just for visualisation purposes.

Alright Gav. You're attempting a graphic novel? woh. Good luck!.

I havnt finished my skull yet, but there is a wip of it in my Meryl Felstorm thread somewhere near the end. Was pleased with it, think I got quite a nice hard surface feel to it through using the planar and trim adaptive brushes.

This guy Eddie's got a good look to him, sort of street punk, hanging round back allies? more of a night person than a morning one?

I dont know if you have heard of Zac Petroc? He posts up on ZCentral, does some cool comic book style illustrations, rendered in Z. Might give you some ideas? Sounds like you got quite alot already though.

Cheers Ben,
I've been developing this story very slowly for ages, but I've never managed to put as much time into it as I should have, and now I am it seems to finally be coming together.
Eddie is meant to be a shady character, so I'm glad you described him the way you did, you're on the right track! I won't say anything more, giving away plot lines etc...lol

Have got started on another character from the story, Oswald. He wont be dressed this way throughout the story, he's a security guard, but I think he will wear a vest during one particular scene so I went with that for now.
