object 'visibility' - solved!

hi,

Is it possible to render an object invisible, but still have it block out the view behind it. eg - a cat sat on a door mat: you can't see the cat but nor can you see the mat or door where the cat blocks the view. moreover, if the cat was playing with a ball of wool; you can see the strand when in front, but not when it moves behind the feline.

so it's kinda invisible but not really, if you get me.

thanks
