edges probs

Can you guys figure out whats wrong with this? I have come back to an old model to alter it, I extruded the edges where the black shading is, I have checked there are no hidden face and extra polys, i have merged all verts, and softened the edges several times and this is what i end up with. :headbang:

There happened to be extra faces that I thought I deleted, once I deleted them it cleared up.
