Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Greetings,
i'm just getting into 3d art and was wondering if anybody could suggest a decent graphics card for someone who is financially challenged? Any pointers would be much appreciated,
cheers,
Mat.

I have a ge-force 4200 ti.. cost me about 300 bucks and soft modded it to a quadro4 700 xgl. Saves a lot of money and works almost as well as the quadro fx 1000.

I'd stay away from raideons.

Just type in "soft quadro" in a search engine and stuff should come up...

Why stay away from Radeons, Kurt? I was thinking of upgrading to something like a Radeon 9800 Pro. Are there glitches/incompatibilities, or just not great performance?

Thanks

Most of the stories i hear with radeons are they dont work well with maya.. I've heard of a few that work ok but for the most part they had some issuses maya..

Check the support forum at alias and you see a lot of the post are having trouble with 9800.

yeah i have a radeon 9800 and i have trouble with maya sometimes, usually small things like slight text blurring and stuff but for a card that claims to be the best on the market im really dissatisfied.

I use a FireGL T2-128. Which is officially supported in Maya. It's only an entry level card, but seems to score fairly well on SpecPerf when compared to the Quadro 700 xgl.

$380 or something Australian, it was. So, should be half that for the americans on the forum.

As for any issues. When using a single display it works perfectly. But for some reason, attaching a second display can cause some "Speckling" on surfaces, and the ocasional menu to not be completely erased until another action is performed in the viewport.

Hi there!

I have a question for Kurt. I have the Geforce TI 4600 and you said you have soft modded your Geforce TI 4200 to a quadro4 700 xgl.

How does that work or how did you do that???....or what does that mean? lol:-))

...It's great to know that you don't have to buy the best graphic card on the market to make things happenuser added image

softmod is like a software overclock. it basically runs the same card with a higher clock speed, because the factories set them lower than they realistically run stable, for guaranteed stability (sorry for awful explanation). basically it makes the card run faster. usually you just download a program to do it, but ocasionally it will make the card overheat so you may need to add some extra coolers.
