Correct character animations for game ?

Hello,
creating animations for game character.
https://youtu.be/T7Hn5AOxXhQ
Worst thing is that I never know if I go on correct path of doing it.
I want to create basic movements, (going back front, sides, run, forward and to sides, jumping, squat..)
So far I created walk and run forward, I imported it in from maya to unity 3d, and it looks good. But running to sides looks weird and not correct as center of character drifts in unity.. Thats not the main problem though.
Could someone post some example where walk cycles are done correctly ? On youtube all I can find is walking straight or more advanced, but not basics.
