Shatter Effect

How many have used Shatter extensively?

It kind of sucks.(IMHO) Anybody had any luck getting higher-res cracks and breaks?

Anyone know if this feature has been improved upon at all in 4.5?

Almost any feature that does the work for you isn't going to do it exactly like you want. You'll almost always get the best results doing it yourself.

So then the obvious next question would be, how do you get a good shatter?

I have never run across anything that will show me a good way to do it. I tried a simple sphere shatter and it wasn't very good.

What I did was key a sphere falling and just as it hits the ground plane substituted a Dynamic Shattered copy.

This also leads me into a question about debris. How do you get good looking debris off of something that breaks? Do you setup particles and then instance in geometry?

Thanks,

Tem

That's one way.

There are many ways one could go about that.

At work, we mainly create our objects, then, break them up using Maya's splitting, and detatching toolset, then for debris, we mainly use many layers of particles for dust, and we have stock debris explosions that we comp into the shot in post.

I wish there was a "make kick ass explosion with debris" setting in Maya, but, not yetuser added image

Untill then, keep rendering those layers! user added image
