creating waves

just wondering if there is a quick way to produce a ripple effect on an object (in this case a cylider)

im going for a stargate look...eg ripples etc

any ideas how to do this?

look at the non-linear deformers under the Deform menu.. I bet you will find somthing usefull there ..

yeah..thats what i have tried but it didnt effect my object user added image

are there any other techniques?

Your object need to have enough geometry to get deformed.. a 1 x 1 x 1 box dont have much geo to actually get deformed much ..

When you apply the deformer, you have to change the values of the deformer. Its default set to do 0 deformation (but I guess you have tried that allready)
