Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

need help with painting character skin weights

hi, i'm having a go at painting skin weights on my character but I'm having major problems with it. Every time I paint an area with a zero value (black) it will appear white on another part.

These pictures can explain it.

Can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

thanks

as far as I can tell nothing, the wieght has to add up to 1 so if you take wieght away from a vert then it has to go to another the trick is to get it to go to or spread between the joints you want it to.

oh ok, cheers

does it make it easier if I have the model smoothed out? or would that just complicate other things?

When you made the bind to the skin, it would have asked you to specify how the joints effect the skin. WhatI suggest is getting hold of Mikes Character Setup Tutoial and he goes through Painting Weights very well in this tutorial. The subject is a little heavy to explain fully on the forums.
