Alf makes it to Maya

Well, Alfie finally made it to Maya! I have spent a little while learning how to paint skin weights (bit fiddly and not perfected yet) and putting a skeleton and simple rig on my character.

For the rigging I watched Jason Busby's (www.3dbuzz.com) movie which came with 3D World Mag and looked at Instant Maya which came with PLE. I wanted to get an idea about character rigging in Maya - so far not that complicated!

Thing is my model looks creasy, it was exported as a *.dxf file from A:M and looks a bit rough - anyone got any ideas why? Also selecting and hiding area to make painting weights easier was a bit of a problem, can you select a group of polys and hide others so you can get at area to paint skin weights?

Tickety boo and ta ta for a bit...

Assuming that this is a polygon model, you could try couple of things.

1. Go in to component mode and selecl all edges. Then select Polygon -> Normals -> Soften / Harden option box: Click on All Soft and OK.

2. If it still is too rough for you, try the Polygon -> Smooth to get some more tessellation.

(can't remember the exact names of the commands but you should find them easily. Don't know how they will affect your skinning though. You might have to do it again... Hope this helps...
