Why Am I freezing Up?

I am using Maya2008 and I have over
140GB of free Space
2GB of Memory

And yet I cant seem to not freez up while Modeling. It's like even my small mesh's will eventually cause lag and freeze. Dose that make sense? If so any idea's on why I'm freezing up?

Thanks Much

you didn't mention your video card specs... and most times viewport issues are card or driver related.
