This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Here are a couple of the sketches that I have been doing - just trying to get an idea of the final figure and what objects he will be carrying.

Hotei is often shown holding a 'wish giving' fan called an oogi, (though I haven't had much luck finding a real reference) and a cloth sack which is filled with many precious items. some descriptions even say that his sack is filled with children, which would be very cool to model, but might be a bit much for this challenge... A lot of statues seem to show him holding an old gnarly stick from which his bag is hung, though I haven't found this mentioned in written descriptions.

I personally like the sketch on the left. If you give him the neaklace thing it would be good.

some guy - thanks mate - not sure what pose to put him in - I like the idea of him carrying a big jug of something tasty.

gster - cheers! yeah, I'm going to rig and then pose him. I just can't decide whether to put the clothes on before or after posing. post a pic of your hotei if you get a chance.

gster - thanks mate user added image - I have one just the same as that - so you reckon that thing on the back is a fan? - I figured it was some kind of umbrella.

tweetytunes / goksimaster - thanks for the crit user added image - yeah his neck is definately too long. At the moment I am keeping him fairly close to my 3dsk referance while I block him out. I am planning to deform him to make him a lot more podgy, though part of me kind of likes the idea of doing a fairly realistic looking hotei as well.

Here is a small update - I attached the hands and did a bit more work on his body...
