Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

THX1138-Sept/Oct challenge

Ok, finially found an idea. Going to do a diarama of the mystrerious, and ancient Moai Heads of Easter Island. They appear all over the Island but I'm only going to focus on one part. The Statue Quarry on the slopes of the Extinct Volcano of Mt. Rano Raraku.

I will be modeling a few of the heads, and a portion of the slope of the volcano. This inlcudes the grasses, and trails that surround the giant heads.

I hope I haven't bit off more than I can chew for this project.

Fund a Youtube link to show a good refference as to how big they are

Just testing the type of grass I wanted to use. I have never really messed with Maya paint effects much. This project will make exclusive use of them. The paint effects grass in the pic was converted to poly's, then rendered in out in mental ray via seperate passes. I tried to render out just a single beauty pass and LOL, I wont be trying that again.

Anyway, this pic was just a small test so there is nothing really special about it.

Nice Idea man.

Just thinking that you might be able to get away with just a texture coupled with a bump for the further away parts, Also I wouldbe tempted to use fur over paint FX as mental Ray renders that, you can use various maps to control the colours, legnth, baldness etc etc. More efficient thant converting to polys.

Yeah, I was thinking about a texture/ bump for the furthest parts. I will try the fur in addition, and see how it works, and using color maps is a great idea; however, converting paint effects to poly's and rendering out in passes in Mental ray was pretty quick. The only down side was that it made the scene super heavy, and moving around the scene was slow.

Guess the grass is going to be the hardest thing to tackle.

yeah thats true, although you can reduse the number of polys, ive done it to little effect for the overall result. I used a bit of paint FX in the last challenge for the weeds on my pirates hat and reduced them right down.

Think I would probably use fur though, be easier to control, I did a little test and it took 16 seconds to render a plane covered in fur ,and there was no lag on the screen.

update..

Tried out the maya fur for grass, and the render just didn't look as good as the poly grass from PaintFx did. It looked blown out, and void of any color reguardless of how I set the color attributes. Perhaps that is due to not having much experience in fur. I need a good tut to know how to use it or someones expertise in the area.

Anyway, here is a second grass render test from Paint FX. This time I modeled a decent base, and textured the ground plane.

Update...

Started on the Moai head. I'm about half finnished with it so far. The chin, jaw line, and the nose need alot more work to match the refferences. For the other heas, I'm going to copy, and change them up a little so that they will not all look 100% identical.

excellent idea THX1138... really love your grass so far...it looks great.

looks like you've made a good start on the moai head, though I think it needs to be a bit more elongated and rotated back - they tend to lean back - that's if you're keeping the same as the actual heads.

Anyway, made alot of progress on the head so far. The chin and Jaw line look alot closer to the real thing now, an I also made alot of progress on the nose also. I still have more to do but not much.
