How do smoothing groups work in Maya?

I'm wondering how I can make Maya adjust the normals of my faces according to thier angle to each other. or how I can manualy assign smoothing groups.

I'm not sure if I understand your question right, but in the Soften/Harden Edges options, you can adjust the max angle that the soften/harden affects.
