SGI acquired by Rackable

SGI, a former 3D graphics pioneer, is in talks with server-maker Rackable, who is acquiring SGI for $25 million.

I just thought that everyone should know since SGI was involved in the development of Maya in the late 1990s.

Perhaps what is amusing that buying enough SGI kit for 25 animators would have probably cost more than $25 million in the 1990s.

How SGI has fallen.

Wow!

I know they have been in serious trouble lately, with loan after loan from the banks and government.

I owned a SGI Octane2 for a year, and sold it 4 months ago. Great machines, very very solid hardware and super OS. Pity about lack of support from the mips processor line.

Yeah, it is rather unfortunate that financial crisis got them bankrupt.

I must agree, the Octane is a pretty cool machine! user added image

Also, after reading the customer letters, it seems SGI is merging with Rackable rather than being acquired. They also hinted at a new system called UltraViolet... I wonder what it is? user added image

There is a thread over at Nekochan about the acquisition / merger. UltraViolet has something to do with Intel Core i7 Xeons...or so they say...New Desktops / Servers?

After working on IRIX 6.5 i truly miss it, so efficient and uncluttered!

Yeah, I read about it there too. I doubt it will be a desktop. SGI seems to have no idea how to sell desktops these days, their Virtu desktops (rebranded BOXX kit) didn't even last a year.
