Normal map

Need help guys, I'm trying to normal map a character. I have tranfered surface info via the maya interface, have assigned the resultant map ( exp in targa format, is this ok?) to a fresh lambert material, done the out colour and normal camera in the connection editor, and have high quality rendering on, but when I render the whole scene is black like there is no lights what is the prob? Also the lambert material turns a black colour as the connection editor is sorted, any ideas?
