Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

in my opinion, the best 'guide' would be taking a model with over-tesselated objects and trying each option out on said model, then performing an undo if you don't like your outcome.

or the help files (press F1 and do a search on the tool) should help user added image
